Local Yokels
This weekend, a new farmer’s market debuted that is incredibly accessible to us. There are others around, but they take a little more effort and advanced planning to get to between kid activities on a busy weekend. We had a bright, sunny, (freakishly) hot weekend — perfect weather for choosing and eating some locally grown fresh food.
Being the suburbanites that we are, we showed up to the farmer’s market without cash. Duh. The Mr. wandered off to get some bills and the kids got a chance to paint with vegetables — messy, but fun.
Next, it was time to purchase. We bought some farm fresh eggs, goat cheese, asparagus and lamb chops. The Mr. and I ate the eggs the next morning and they were wonderful. (The kids were at a sleepover at their grandmother’s house, so they’ll have to wait for some eggs.) We all tasted the goat cheese with our lunch — the Mr. was a big fan and the rest of us could take it or leave it. Dinner was grilled lamb chops and asparagus. YUM. Our kids looooooove lamb chops and it is always one of the most successful kid meals around here. Unusual, but true. The local asparagus were much milder in flavor than we’re used to and our son, who usually is not a fan of the spears, could not get enough. (This may also be related to his recent education in the effect that asparagus has on a certain bodily function.
)
We will be frequenting our new farmer’s market and bringing more cash next time. Can’t wait until the fresh fruit starts appearing. As for vegetables, our own garden is enjoying some mixed success — so far the sugar snap peas are thriving the most, thanks to me and my “black thumb” staying far, far away!

As I was buying cucumbers tonight at Kroger, and noticed they were from HOLLAND of all places, I decided it was high time to find a farmers market near us. Geez. We’re super happy it’s almost strawberry picking season!
