Packing Fatigue
I am so very bad at packing. I long to be one of those women who can just zip around the house with purpose, grabbing exactly the right things and effortlessly zipping them into a suitcase.
Instead, I am a woman who whines about packing while walking aimlessly around the house, grabbing too many things – some are the right things, some are not. I don’t even put them in suitcases – I just make stacks and piles all over the house until the Mr. finally forces me to be done and starts putting my piles into suitcases and duffel bags.
We’re off for a week at the beach, and I’m so excited! It means I won’t have to pack anymore, too!
Before the beach, though, we have a side trip to a swim meet about an hour or so north of here. Yeah, the side trip is complicating things for a bad packer like me. Plus, this is the kind of beach trip where you have to bring all your food and condiments and toilet paper and stuff. Whew. It’s exhausting to just think about it.
I keep writing lists, but I still have so much randomly important information free floating in my head. I am literally a scatter brain right now.
OK, one more big push and then I’m done! (I hope……)

I’m going on a train vacation – the station is 4 blocks from the car rental place so we are going to have to “pack light” so we can haul it there in one trip! I am not looking forward to packing for that one. Hope you don’t have to sit on the suitcase to get it closed!
Uh oh. We’re going on a beach trip in a few weeks, and now I’m worried that I might turn out to be a bad packer.
@murisopsis - We may actually have to sit on the trunk of the van to get it shut!
@transvestite_rabbit - Don’t worry – I set the bar low. Very, very low.
@turningreen - Back when my kids were small, of course I did all the packing for them, including all the kajillion things small children need. Then I had to pack for myself, which is complicated because I have to allow for multiple weather possibilities. In contrast, my husband only packed for himself, and he wears the same thing no matter what the weather. Then he would express surprise at how long it took me to pack, when he could have his bag ready to go in about four minutes. Grrr.
It’s easier now. The kids pack for themselves, and if they forget something, TFB.
@transvestite_rabbit - Yeah, I’m still in that early phase. My daughter essentially packs for herself with a little oversight from me. My son (ineffectively) packed his bathing suits, so that’s progress. The Mr. takes down the shelf of “beach stuff” from the garage and puts it in the van, then packs his clothes and sits on the couch until I am done with everything else. He eventually takes over by putting it all in receptacles and shoving it in the car. I never remember the ride away from the house, because I am finally crashing from all the packing frenzy.
I am at the beach right now!!!! I rock at packing. Sorry.
If you had just told me, I would have provided a list for you. I make a packing list for every situation. Side trips, overnights, trips with hikes AND pools, trips with toiletries and beach shelters, you name it. But anyway, with the minivan, you don’t have to be a good packer. You can take nearly everything and call it a day.
